Chair's report - January Board meeting

February 09, 2026

This report contains general updates and a summary of the topics discussed at open session of the January 29 Board meeting. Items discussed at this meeting represent matters of importance at the highest level of the institution, and these reports will help provide context and clarity around the progression of major projects and decisions.

You can read President Johnson鈥檚 report from the meeting here.

As we enter 2026, the Board is also entering a time of renewal. This was my first meeting as Board chair, and Kamal Basra鈥檚 first meeting as deputy chair. In addition, we welcomed a new Board member, Christine Stahler鈥攁n 天美mv天美 alumnus and committed social change leader with more than 25 years of multi-sector experience in finance, government and First Nations governance.

In general, this has been a time of significant transition for the Board. We have welcomed many new members in recent months and are nearing the conclusion of a comprehensive governance review that has seen our operations change significantly over the past few years.

As someone with decades of governance experience, as well as someone who has served in many university leadership roles, I believe that Boards are one of the most compelling forms of democracy in action, and that universities are critical spaces for discovery, innovation and dialogue, especially during these increasingly polarized times. Continuing into 2026, the Board remains committed to working collegially with members of the executive team and Senate, to being transparent and open about our decision-making processes and to making decisions in the best interests of the university.

The next Board meeting will take place on March 26, 2026 and the schedule of upcoming meetings can be found on our website. I highly encourage community members to get involved and attend the open session in person or via Zoom by completing a . I also want to highlight that all meeting agendas and materials for our open Board sessions are shared publicly, allowing community members to stay informed about our discussions.

Sincerely,

Carol Herbert
Chair, Board of Governors
