MEd in Curriculum & Instruction: Digital and New Media Literacies
Reimagine Literacy for a Digital World.
The MEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Digital and New Media Literacies is a fully online program for educators seeking to engage critically with digital tools and texts. Taught by literacy and language education faculty, the program blends theory and practice to support innovative, equitable teaching with media like podcasts, games, social media, and more.

Practicing K-12 teachers, librarians and instructors that are engaged in post-secondary, community-based adult education, or similar areas of education.
Program Structure
- 2-year program held over six consecutive terms
- Six 5-unit courses plus a comprehensive exam
- Cohort-based model
- Online synchronous classes
- Classes meet online one evening per week, and usually run from 4:30 - 9:30 pm; 2 hours synchronous online, 3 hours of independent work

Program Design
Designed with working professionals in mind, this two-year degree program offers the opportunity to obtain a high-quality master's degree. Our cohort-based model allows students to work through the program and coursework together (18-24 students).
This MEd program reimagines professional development for today鈥檚 educators by streamlining their learning through critical theory, hands-on practice, and community-driven reflection. Drawing on 天美mv天美鈥檚 long-standing leadership in digital media and literacy research, the program focuses on new media as texts to be critically consumed, remixed, and situated within sociocultural contexts. You will gain tools to teach critical digital literacy, address online bias and harms, and create inclusive, ethical digital learning environments. Through engaging coursework, collaborative dialogue, and multimodal assignments, you will develop their own digital teaching philosophies and join a growing community of educators committed to equity, innovation, and transformative literacy practices.
The program is designed to provide opportunities for you to:
- Learn how literacies are shifting due to new digital media
- Explore how technological changes impact literacy teaching and learning
- Plan and deliver lessons that incorporate games, comics, film, podcasts and social media in linguistically and ethnically diverse classrooms and communities
- Receive hands-on training in podcasting, video essays and other digital literacies
- Learn strategies for teaching critical media literacies
- Develop pedagogies for teaching people new to technologies
- Learn frameworks for building equity into digital literacy program design, addressing bias and discrimination in online settings and promoting fair and inclusive online spaces
EDUC 820-5: CURRENT ISSUES IN CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY
Focuses on educational issues, trends and practices which impact teaching and learning in schools and other educational settings.
EDUC 740-5: ISSUES IN PRE-SERVICE TEACHER EDUCATION
Several local and international issues related to teacher education are examined, including longstanding criticisms and more recent concerns. Specific topics will be explored beginning with a brief history of teacher education and its "place" in the university, better understanding varying models for teacher education programs, exploring teacher education as a site for social justice and democracy, and looking at the work of teacher educators, those who teach teachers. Finally, the course will consider the types of research being done which inform teacher education curriculum, policy, and perception.
EDUC 816-5: DEVELOPING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES FOR DIVERSE EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS
Investigates theories and issues associated with developing educational programs and practices in various educational contexts. Addresses the development of new programs and their implementation in schools and other educational settings.
EDUC 823-5: CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN AN INDIVIDUAL TEACHING SPECIALTY
An intensive examination of developments in a curriculum area selected by the student. In addition, the course will deal with major philosophical and historical factors that influence the present state and future directions of curriculum and instruction.
EDUC 830-5: IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Problems and practices associated with innovation and implementation including the nature of change in the educational context, the roles of teachers, administrators, change agents, and evaluators.
EDUC 848-5: IDEAS AND ISSUES IN AESTHETIC EDUCATION
This course relates critical ideas in aesthetics to questions concerning the nature, purpose, and provision of the arts (visual art, music, drama, dance, literature) in education.
EDUC 883-5: MED COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.
