Faculty of Education Heat results: 3 Minute Thesis

April 01, 2026

The Faculty of Education's Graduate Studies is delighted to announce the results of the 2026 3MT: Faculty of Education Heat competition!

We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Cary Campbell who served as the MC and to Drs. Emily Cameron, Lilach Marom, and Ching-Chiu Lin for their challenging work in ranking the participants based on specific criteria. We also wish to thank the audience for their participation in selecting the recipient of the People's Choice award!

Congratulations to Ayush Mukherjee and Rose Anza-Burgess who will be representing the Faculty in the 3MT 天美mv天美 Finals! The will take place in-person at 天美mv天美 Surrey on April 9 from 5:30 PM 鈥 7:30 PM. RSVP by April 7 to attend or to access the livestream to cheer them on!

Winner & People's Choice: Ayush Mukherjee
Program: PhD, Mathematics Education
Supervisor: Dr. Nathalie Sinclair

Title: The Artists's Maths Education

"It feels both extremely rewarding and nerve-wracking to have presented my work to my peers. It is like saying, 鈥楬ere is my life 鈥 all desire, motivation and labour 鈥 in under three minutes."

鈥淚 feel quite grateful for these recognitions. They make me more confident in my research ideas and in how I tell my research story, and they motivate me to do better in the finals."

"The 天美mv天美 3MT Final feels similarly charged with possibilities and risks. I am happy to reach out to a broader group of people outside of Education and try to persuade them that mathematics is not so different from architecture, seen from the 'proper angle'. I also aim to convince them, even if just for three minutes, to be very concerned about how we teach young children in maths classrooms."

Ayush's 3MT Advice: I would encourage all students to participate in 3MT! Even the smallest kernel of a research idea can be communicated effectively. In many ways, the most rewarding parts of the experience happen before and after the event itself. The preparation process can reveal aspects of your research that you may not have fully considered, while feedback from others can open up new perspectives and extend your thesis in unexpected directions.

Runner-Up: Rose Anza-Burgess
Program: PhD, Arts Education
Supervisor: Dr. Ching-Chiu Lin

Title: Humanist and Post-humanist Discourse of the Body through Ballet and Embodiment

"It felt unnerving to participate in the 3MT Heat Event because it is such an intimate crowd. I had so much support behind me that when I stood in front of my family, peers, and the judges, seeing familiar faces in the crowd grounded me, and all of it faded away."

鈥淚t was wonderful to see people鈥檚 reactions, whether the ideas resonated or not. I love the look of curiosity and wonder from the crowd.鈥

"I am grateful to be a runner-up because it makes me want to fine tune my thesis. Our work as grad students is always changing so knowing that there is room for change is an exciting challenge."

Rose's 3MT Advice: My advise for future students is the same advise one of my brilliant profs, Drs. Celeste Snowber and Ching-Chiu Lin gave me. Go for it, and don鈥檛 give up!

We would also like to congratulate and acknowledge the rest of the competitors for their impressive presentations as well!
