Story, practice, and community: reflections from the Indigenous Knowledge Holder Teaching Series
The Indigenous Knowledge Holder Teaching Series, hosted by the Faculty of Education’s Office of Indigenous Education (OIE), brings together artists, educators, and community members to share ways of knowing grounded in relationship, responsibility, and lived experience. Through film, storytelling, and creative practice, these gatherings create space to learn from Indigenous knowledge systems and the communities that carry them forward.
This feature highlights two recent events from the series, each offering a distinct yet connected perspective on how knowledge is shared across generations. In February 2026, Haida filmmaker joined the ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ community for a screening and discussion of Saints and Warriors, exploring storytelling as a means of strengthening identity, connection, and resilience. In October 2025, artists and led a gathering centred on weaving, carving, and the teachings embedded within creative practice, inviting reflection on how knowledge is carried through the hands, across relationships, and over time.
Together, these events reflect the many ways knowledge is held, shared, and sustained: through story, practice, and community.

At a February 2026 screening and discussion, Haida filmmaker Nang Ḵ’uulas Patrick Shannon shared how Saints and Warriors captures the deep connections between basketball, identity, and community in Haida Gwaii, and how storytelling can carry resilience across generations.
Artists in residence share knowledges they carry through weaving and carving
At an October 2025 gathering, artists Angela Paul and Aaron Nelson-Moody invited participants into the living practices of weaving and carving, offering reflections on how knowledge is held, shared, and sustained through relationships, responsibility, and community.
