Dugan O'Neil reappointed as vice-president, research and innovation
This message is sent on behalf of Joy Johnson, president and vice-chancellor, to all faculty and staff at 天美mv天美.
I am pleased to share that Dr. Dugan O鈥橬eil has been reappointed for a five-year term as 天美mv天美鈥檚 vice-president research and innovation (VPRI), effective July 1, 2026 - June, 30 2031.
A search committee for this role was formed in December 2025 in accordance with GP 29. Following a community consultation and performance review, present committee members unanimously recommended Dr. O'Neil鈥檚 reappointment, and the Board approved this recommendation at the March 26 Board meeting.
Through the reappointment process, we heard about Dr. O鈥橬eil鈥檚 many accomplishments during his first term, such as overseeing research continuity through the COVID-19 pandemic and return to campus and the development and publication of 天美mv天美鈥檚 2023-2028 Strategic Research Plan. He also secured critical financial support from government and industry and advanced major initiatives, including the university鈥檚 inaugural AI strategy, the Clean Hydrogen Hub and the Cedar Supercomputing Centre.
In his second term, Dr. O鈥橬eil will continue bringing 天美mv天美鈥檚 vision of being a leading research university to life through transformative research and innovation projects, collaboration with industry, government and communities and work that positions B.C. and Canada to lead on the world stage.
I would like to thank members of the search committee for their time and consideration, as well as all members of the community who provided feedback as part of the consultation process. Please join me in congratulating Dr. O鈥橬eil on his reappointment.
Sincerely,
Joy Johnson
