Abstract

Digital storytelling (DS) offers a powerful methodological approach to explore the nuanced experiences of older adults who have experienced homelessness. Grounded in the idea of Aging in the Right Place (AIRP), which emphasizes the importance of environments that support older adults’ diverse needs and preferences. This project involved a co-creative process with participants using videography based on photovoice (PV) and life-course narratives.

We collaborated with three participants from the Whole Way House (WWH) program to create a digital storytelling piece that intertwines PV photographs with focused interviews. The final product captures participants’ voices and visuals, offering an intimate look into what it means to age in the right place from their perspectives.

Several themes emerged through this process. Participants emphasized the importance of mobility, access, and safety in their communities—particularly the need to live near essential resources and services. Social integration also surfaced as a key element, with participants valuing opportunities to build relationships and access spaces that support connection. The supportive nature of housing and related services was noted, alongside a perceived disconnect between the expectations of older adults and those of service providers. Finally, engagement with both the built and natural environment—especially access to nature and walking trails—was seen as vital to participants' well-being.
