Yurou Sang, PhD
Laboratory Manager
After completing my Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from UBC, I gained diverse research experience in enzyme engineering, immunoassay development and antibody conjugation in academia and industry. I am now applying this expertise to HIV research in the Brockman and Brumme laboratories at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ, using cell culture, flow cytometry and molecular approaches to support ongoing projects.
Peter Cheung, PhD
Research Associate; Adjunct Professor, FHS
I obtained my Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of British Columbia in 2002, and have served as a Research Associate at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS at Providence Health Care since 2006. In November 2019, I was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ.
Aniqa Shahid, PhD
Post-Doctoral Fellow
I completed my PhD at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ’s Faculty of Health Sciences in 2024. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Zabrina Brumme’s laboratory, with a cross-appointment at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. My research focuses on characterizing the HIV reservoir using molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches. My postdoctoral work is supported by CIHR and Michael Smith Health Research BC trainee awards.
F. Harrison Omondi, MSc
PhD candidate
I am a PhD candidate at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ in the lab of Dr. Zabrina Brumme. My research focuses on studying HIV persistence, proviral evolution and dynamics in understudied populations. Through my research I aim to contribute knowledge that will advance equitable HIV cure strategies that better reflect globally diverse populations.
Maggie Duncan, BSc honours
PhD candidate
I am a PhD candidate in the Faculty of the Health Sciences at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ and a student research assistant at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS under the supervision of Dr. Zabrina Brumme. My PhD research seeks to better understand factors influencing HIV reservoir size and to improve upon the molecular techniques used to quantify the HIV reservoir. As an undergraduate, also in the Faculty of Health Sciences at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ, I studied inhibitors of the influenza M2 viroporin under the supervision of Dr. Ian Tietjen and completed my Honours thesis on the role of the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) in herpesvirus genome replication under the supervision of Dr. Masahiro Niikura.
Amanda Cabral da Silva, MSc
PhD student
I completed my Master’s degree in the Allergy and Immunopathology Program at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, after which I joined the Medical Investigation Laboratory 60 (LIM-60) at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine. Then, from 2021 to 2024, I worked as a Research Assistant at Emory University’s Pathology Advanced Translational Research Unit (PATRU), USA. Currently, I am completing my PhD in the Faculty of the Health Sciences at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ, and I am also a student research assistant at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS under the supervision of Dr. Zabrina Brumme. My research focuses on transcriptionally and translationally competent proviruses that persist during antiretroviral therapy.
Rachel Waterworth, BSc
PhD student
I am a PhD student in ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ's Faculty of Health Sciences under the supervision of Mark Brockman. My project focuses on developing and applying bioinformatics pipelines to study interactions between viruses and the adaptive immune response. I integrate computational approaches with immunological data to better understand mechanisms of antiviral immune recognition and response.
Kieran Anderson, BSc honours
Master's student
I completed my BHSc (Honours) degree at McMaster University in 2024 with an undergraduate thesis project that focussed on Th2-associated cytokines and inflammation under the supervision of Dr. Carl Richards. I am currently enrolled in a Master of Science program in the MBB department at ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ under the supervision of Dr. Mark Brockman where I am investigating plasma extracellular vesicles isolated from people living with HIV.
Evan Barad, BSc honours
Master's student
I completed my BSc (Honours) in ÌìÃÀmvÌìÃÀ's Faculty of Health Science in October of 2023. I am currently a Master of Science student in FHS, and a research assistant at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. My master's thesis examines the genetic composition, evolutionary dynamics and cellular sources of non-suppressible HIV viremia in individuals receiving long-term antiretroviral therapy.
