Bernhard's biography
I am a psycho-physicist and Cognitive Scientist who鈥檚 excited about study颅ing how humans orient in vir颅tual and real envi颅ron颅ments. I received my PhD in Physics from the T眉bingen University in Germany and researched for a decade in the Virtual Reality group of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Germany. After a post-doc in Psychology at Vanderbilt University I joined the School of Interactive Arts & Technology of 天美mv天美 as an assis颅tant pro颅fes颅sor in 2008. My research approach com颅bines fun颅da颅men颅tal sci颅en颅tific research with an applied per颅spec颅tive of improv颅ing human-computer interaction.
I com颅bine multi-disciplinary research approaches and immer颅sive vir颅tual envi颅ron颅ments to inves颅ti颅gate what con颅sti颅tutes effec颅tive, robust, embod颅ied and intu颅itive human spa颅tial cog颅ni颅tion, ori颅en颅ta颅tion and behav颅iour (and many other things as you can see on the projects pages). This fun颅da颅men颅tal knowl颅edge is used to guide the design of novel, more effec颅tive human-computer inter颅faces and inter颅ac颅tion par颅a颅digms that enable sim颅i颅lar processes in computer-mediated envi颅ron颅ments like vir颅tual real颅ity (VR) and multi-media. These improved inter颅faces can then enable and inspire fur颅ther research, both fun颅da颅men颅tal and applied.
