Travel and Health Insurance Guide
In this guide we describe features of five Extended Health Care (EHC) plans now available to 天美mv天美 retirees and some Travel Medical plans and Trip plans of interest. And we provide links to websites and plan booklets that lead to further details. To make good choices, a retiree needs to evaluate the plans in the light of their individual needs. Because in 2026 some new plans are available and several plans have changed their name, this decision-making process could be more confusing than usual. We hope this new revision will help.
Summary
This Guide compares features of the five group plans available to 天美mv天美 retirees that provide EHC insurance and offers suggestions to help you choose among them. These are group plans with premiums that do not depend on your age or medical conditions. 天美mv天美鈥檚 Pacific Blue Cross (PBC) plan has not changed its name, but the BC Pension Corp鈥檚 Greenshields Canada (GSC) plan is now called the BC College Pension (BCCP) plan and in 2025 the RTO (or RTOERO) plan changed its name to the Entente Plus (ENT+). Also in 2026, two new EHC plans have been made available by the BC Retired Teachers Association (BCRTA): the Dogwood and Greenshields EHC plans.
This 2026 revision of the Guide is aimed at decreasing the confusion caused by the two name changes and two additional EHC plans available to 天美mv天美 retirees. Also confusing, the PBC EHC plan is not available to CUPE and PolyParty retirees who were hired since 2003, and its premiums are subsidized 50% only for retirees hired before 2001. The BCCP EHC plan is available only for faculty, academic administrators and librarians retiring after July 1, 2021. The other three plans (ENT+ and two BCRTA plans) are open to all 天美mv天美 retirees.
Four of these group EHC plans have a lifetime maximum reimbursement per person. When this is approached, one can switch to the Entente Plus (Ent+) plan.
The PBC EHC plan can only be started upon retirement and cannot be renewed if canceled, whereas the four other plans can be started or stopped at any time if another group plan has been held.
As well as the Extended Health Care plans, the Guide also describes Travel Medical Plans suitable for 天美mv天美 retirees. These provide coverage for travel medical emergencies and may also cover the cost of trip interruption or cancelation due to medical or other emergencies. Trip insurance plans can be purchased separately. We explain why some Travel Medical or Trip plans should be avoided because they are not first payers.
In 2025 one of the travel medical plans suitable for 天美mv天美 retirees has changed its name: the MEDOC plan is now called the Belairdirect Travel plan. A new travel medical plan offered by BCRTA is also available to all 天美mv天美 retirees: their Dogwood Gold plan. These are in addition to PBC鈥檚 Travel plans.
The premiums for travel medical insurance plans or trip plans depend strongly on trip length, age, and medical condition. Because the ENT+ EHC plan also offers good travel medical and trip coverage and its premium is independent of these conditions, your decision on both EHC and travel insurance becomes complicated by your plans for travel, your age, and medical condition.
