This book is dedicated to all those who are fighting against despotism and tyranny, and to all those who are struggling to win the eternal battle for human rights and social justice.

Among the family of the social sciences, criminology certainly deserves a prominent place and has a significant social role to play. Two main reasons easily explain criminology鈥檚 major importance. First, it is the science that has as its focus one of the major headaches in modern society, namely the problem of crime. It is the discipline that is devoted to and can provide science-based solutions to the problem. In times of economic prosperity, and prior to the enhanced awareness of climate change, crime used to rank quite high or on the top of the public鈥檚 areas of concern.
