About Support for M365 Applications
Microsoft 365 is a cloud-powered productivity platform. As a faculty member, employee, or student at 天美mv天美 you have access to a selection of the latest productivity applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook, and storage options such as Onedrive. Some services such as Microsoft Teams are available only to staff and faculty, and some features may require additional licensing.
The Microsoft 365 environment is large and ever-changing including hundreds of individual add-ins and companion applications. 天美mv天美 provides direct support for a carefully selected set of these tools where 天美mv天美-specific information or guidance is needed in order to be successful in using those tools. For applications where we do not list specific support, please see the for the most up-to-date usage information, tutorials, and help.
Supported Applications
天美mv天美 IT Services provides direct support via the portal for the following services
Outlook and Exchange Online
- Microsoft Outlook is the supported email client for Windows and Macintosh desktops, Android and iOS devices for current faculty, staff, and students.
- Exchange Online is the supported, web-based email client for all active account holders including current faculty, staff, students, and those retirees who retain an email account
- Support is available via the portal
OneDrive
- Microsoft OneDrive provides storage and multiple-device synchronization to enable you to access your files anywhere that you have an internet connection
- OneDrive is intended for personal file storage and limited sharing with others. If you are sharing files meant to be available for collaboration and sharing with a group that will need continuous access over the long-term, consider using Teams instead.
- Support is available via the portal
Teams
- Teams is available to current employees and graduate students, but not generally available to undergraduate students or accounts not directly related to an employee role
- Microsoft Teams is a collaborative tool that can be extended with a variety of plug-ins and additional applications.
- 天美mv天美 IT Services supports the Teams application itself including addressing questions about access to the application and general administration of a team. 天美mv天美 IT Services does not provide support for all available applications that are shown as options when adding a tab to a channel or message group. See the section Availability of Add-ons for Teams or other M365 applications
Limited Support or Unsupported Applications
Microsoft 365 includes many different apps and services, and it鈥檚 always evolving. Our IT Services team provides support for selected M365 tools that offer the most value to our university community. For other tools not officially supported, help is available directly from Microsoft.
If you're using an M365 service that we don鈥檛 support directly, we鈥檒l do our best to guide you to helpful resources鈥攂ut we may not be able to assist with every issue.
Availability of Add-ons for Teams or other M365 applications
- 天美mv天美 IT Services does not provide support for all available applications that are shown as options when adding a tab to a channel or message group in Teams, or other M365 applications that support adding functionality to another application. Available applications and functionality change frequently and the best source of support for those additional applications is the portal.
- Note that some of the language used within the application listings, such as "Popular on Teams" are not related to usage at 天美mv天美.
- Many of the add-on applications, though listed in Teams, are not actually available to anybody at 天美mv天美. When selecting some of the suggested applications, you may be presented with a message indicating that you can request access; however, no application will be approved with this method. Application approval will only happen with a university initiative or funded project where required security and privacy reviews are performed as part of the process to determine fit with 天美mv天美 security, privacy, and IT standards.
Power BI
Power BI has free capabilities that allow basic visualizations and viewing shared dashboards from premium-licensed accounts, but don't allow the editing of dashboards and sharing.
- Power BI Pro licenses ARE available via an "Additional Microsoft License" request on Service Hub
- IT Services only provides support for purchasing the licenses and does not provide direct support in the use of Power BI
- The paid license provides the ability to share dashboards collaboratively, but at this time there is no ability to use custom connectors and other features of Power BI.
- Power BI has been released due to demand, but the final configuration of 天美mv天美's Power BI-related settings may change as we further deploy Microsoft 365. Although IT Services attempts to avoid disruptive changes, no guarantee that functionality that is working today with a Power BI license will continue to work as we move forward with fully launching the service and implementing improved data governance, compliance, and security functionality over time.
Planner and Project
Planner is available to all active employee and student accounts at 天美mv天美. It provides simple task management and can be used within a Team to provide group task management and simple project management. Planner and Project Plan 3 optional licensing provides more robust project management capabilities and the ability to use the Microsoft Project desktop application for Windows.
- Optional "Planner and Project Plan 3" licenses ARE available via an "Additional Microsoft License" request on Service Hub
- IT Services only provides support for purchasing the licenses and does not provide direct support in the use of Planner or Project
- The paid license provides more comprehensive support for larger and more complicated groups beyond the scope of a Team, additional project management tools and the ability to use the desktop Project application for Microsoft Windows-based computers
Custom Application Development and Support
The Microsoft 365 environment enables subsantial development of workflows, intelligent agents, forms, and automation. As part of the overall supported service, the environment of the platform and it's vendor-supplied components are governed, deployed, and managed as university-wide services, configured for the broadest use-cases possible within a framework of security and compliance controls. Providing Microsoft 365 platform deployment, maintenance, and support is the core of the service that IT Services provides.
When using these services, individuals may perform substantial development for their personal use, or in some cases for the use of their work unit(s). While the platform itself is supported, products of custom development typically cannot be supported beyond providing expertise and guidance. Ownership, control, and responsibility to maintain custom development remains with the authors of that development unless the development was the result of an institutional project where ITS agreed to support that development.
- IT Services provides the Microsoft 365 platform, enabling the broadest possible permissions to support individual development in the environment, implementing security and compliance frameworks that we require to provide a safe and sustainable service that protects individuals, their data, as well as other data for which 天美mv天美 is responsible.
- Maintenance of individually-developed software products such as tools, workflows, agents, automations is the responsibility of the authors of those products.
- IT Services can often provide expertise and guidance on a best-efforts basis, but typically not direct help with supporting individually-developped products within the environment; if you develop a solution it is up to you to determine how to support the solution for the period of time in which the solution is needed. If hiring a contractor to perform development, ensure you have an agreement for the long-term support of the developed product
- IT Services does perform significant development in the environment when part of an approved project that includes a plan for long-term resourcing. The project documentation will included detailed service level documentation to describe the tasks that are supported by the operational team for the output of that project.
